Design Team: WAO Architects
Principal Architect: Chi-Cheng Lee
Designers: Che-Kuang Chuang,
Not just a connection between the two museums, the proposal intends to play a key role as a multipurpose node between the spaces and surroundings. Looping circulation from the Museum of Central Finland to two different levels of Alvar Aalto Museum naturally generates the inner space where serves the uses of the meeting, working and educational activities. Extending the circulation from the inner connections to the front-yard and back hillside creates the possible activities from the existing terraces, water basins and forecourt to rooftop level and the back hillside playground.
Flexible inner space provides the required functions includes the museum shop, educational workshop and workstations. The circling ramps are revealed from the inner space and integrated as an open space where shows the inner activities and movements. Following the same concept, the rooftop where integrates the exiting roofs with the front-yard and back hillside as an one outdoor space creates the possibility of outdoor activities.

As a multidimensional connection, the proposal intends to allow different activities and events happening simultaneously above, inner and below. Moreover, the proposal operates as a platform that creates different scenes in between the spaces and landscape. Besides the spatial dialogue within the existing museums, the proposal also opens an exterior dialogue within the visitors. During the summer time, the structure and rooftop could be integrated with the front-yard and back hillside, and become an amphitheater for outdoor performance, furthermore, become an snow playground during the winter time. Unlike the typical solutions of the museum extension where provide the adequate functions and connections only, the strategy of this proposal intends to transform this architectural entity into an iconic magnet where not only represents the architecture and design spirit of Alvar Aalto, but also attracts the plentiful community activities into this centre formed by these two significant museums.
